About Climate Change

Since the Industrial Revolution, humanity's reliance on fossil fuels has steadily increased, leading to a continuous rise in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. This intensification of the greenhouse effect is driving climate change, posing urgent challenges that the global community must confront without delay.

In response to these pressing issues, EVA Air is fully committed to supporting the aviation industry's collective carbon reduction goals. We align our initiatives with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) carbon reduction strategies and actively leverage data to identify and implement fuel-saving opportunities. Our mission is to deliver air transportation services with superior fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions, consistently minimizing our environmental impact.

As a responsible member of the global community, EVA Air is dedicated to the path toward net-zero carbon emissions. Through our Green Travel Program, we invite passengers to join us in participating in carbon offset initiatives, helping to create more sustainable travel and a healthier planet.

Carbon Offsets and Emission Calculations

Carbon offsetting is a widely adopted practice internationally, involving the purchase of "carbon credits" to support carbon reduction projects that are recognized globally, such as developing renewable energy, reforestation, or improving energy efficiency. These projects are independently verified by third parties, and for every metric ton of CO₂ reduced, one carbon credit is generated.

When travelers purchase carbon credits, the corresponding credits are retired from the registry system to prevent double counting and are used to offset the unavoidable carbon emissions from their journeys. Although carbon offsetting cannot fully replace emission reduction efforts, it is currently one of the internationally recognized approaches to addressing climate change, providing us with an opportunity to support global sustainable development through our actions.

Based on guidelines provided by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), we use EVA Air fuel consumption rates and passenger statistics to calculate emissions per passenger kilometer. Depending on your seating class, route, and number of people in your party, we calculate your carbon emissions. For route information, we use the route’s minimum distance (great-circle distance) for calculations. If you’d like to understand more about how we calculate emissions figures, please see the ICAO’s Carbon Calculator and the IATA's Passenger CO2 Standard Methodology.

Carbon Offset Program

EVA Air collaborates with the UK-based environmental NGO Climate Impact Partners, which selects and funds carbon reduction projects that meet high-quality criteria and are certified by standards such as the Gold Standard or the Verified Carbon Standard. These projects are dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving living environments, ensuring that the carbon credits offset by passengers deliver real environmental benefits. After the offset is completed, Climate Impact Partners provides official certification documents.

Once you decide to join this program, when your air travel is offset, this shows that you are supporting Climate Impact Partners’ global carbon-reduction program. If you’d like to learn more about this program, please see the Climate Impact Partners website.
