About Climate Change
Since the Industrial Revolution, humanity has relied heavily on fossil fuels. This has caused greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to gradually but continually increase. Now, the Greenhouse Effect is causing climate change. These are issues that the entire globe must deal with, and deal with now.
In the face of such issues, EVA Air is doing everything we can to support the aviation industry’s carbon-reduction efforts. We are taking action in line with International Air Transport Association (IATA) strategies, grasping every fuel-savings opportunity we can. We aim to provide air transportation services with outstanding fuel efficiency and low-carbon emissions, and continue to lessen our impacts on the environment. As a global citizen, EVA Air is working toward zero emissions. We provide the Green Travel Program in hopes that you will join with us in using carbon offsets to lessen global warming.
Carbon Offsets and Emission Calculations
Carbon offset is a mechanism in which carbon credits are used to fund internationally-certified carbon reduction programs. These programs offset unavoidable carbon emissions. Carbon offsets are one of the leading international methods of resisting climate change, and are endorsed by the United Nations. After a carbon-reduction program is certified by an independent global organization, every ton of carbon reduction results in a carbon credit. Once a carbon credit is purchased, it is deleted from the original holder’s balance, so it cannot be redundantly used. In other words, offsetting one ton of carbon emissions means a reduction of one ton of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Carbon reduction has to be carried out through specific programs, such as reducing fossil fuels by substituting clean energy instead.
Based on guidelines provided by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), we use EVA Air fuel consumption rates and passenger statistics to calculate emissions per passenger kilometer. Depending on your seating class, route, and number of people in your party, we calculate your carbon emissions. For route information, we use the route’s minimum distance (great-circle distance) for calculations. If you’d like to understand more about how we calculate emissions figures, please see the ICAO’s Carbon Calculator and the IATA's Passenger CO2 Standard Methodology.
Carbon Offset Program
EVA Air maintains high standards in our work. We work with the non-governmental UK organization Climate Impact Partners; together, we select carbon-reduction programs for funding that meet high quality principles, and which are certified to have passed the Gold Standard or the Verified Carbon Standard. These programs all work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the human living environments. This ensures that the carbon credits used to offset your travel carry real benefits. Also, after the offset is complete, Climate Impact Partners will provide a certificate verifying this effectiveness.
Once you decide to join this program, when your air travel is offset, this shows that you are supporting Climate Impact Partners’ global carbon-reduction program. If you’d like to learn more about this program, please see the Climate Impact Partners website.
